Students should use mental images to represent knowledge and talk about them. Creating a “movie in the mind” helps ELLs to understand and store knowledge when they listen or read. Students will need practice in using all of their senses to form a mental image.

Second Grade Mental Images: SMART goal 4/2010
In second grade we are working on a SMART goal in writing. This goal is having the students create a compare and contrast paragraph about two of the four seasons. To get the students ready for this Mrs. Leffler and I had them look through books about each of the four seasons. We asked them to put think about the five senses when writing down facts about each season. I taught them Ms. Cantrell's ideas of moving across the face to remember the five senses. The ear, eyes, nose, mouth, and chin for touch. The students were asked to imagine what you hear, see, smell, taste, and touch during each season. We then created the posters that you see.

I had second graders draw a picture of their favorite sandwich then share orally prior to reading the story The Giant Jam Sandwich. This helped to create interest and get everyone thinking about the context of the story prior to reading. One student who is difficult to motivate stated today "I want to keep reading, I don't want to stop."
